3 November 2014 Os Navicularis
There it is, in all its troublesome glory– the os navicularis, aka accessory navicular that has been causing problems since March. Today we consulted an orthopedic surgeon at UVA about it and they took this x-ray today to compare to the one I had in May. Even after months of rest and PT and custom orthotics, there is really very little change. I can’t walk or run without pain. Jumping is out of the question. The UVA doc says the extra bone needs to come out and that he thinks I’ll recover nicely. But it will be a long road to recovery. Six weeks non-weight bearing followed by six weeks in the air cast (again!). I should be back to jumping in five months.
We’re thinking it over, but are strongly considering parting ways with the os navicularis in early 2015.
(On the photo, it’s the superimposed, roughly oval shape on the right of the picture in the center. The doctor also thinks the os is fractured, which may also account for the pain. And if it hasn’t healed in eight months, it’s unlikely to.)
