15 November 2013 Blowing Glass

Sam got to blow her own glass ornament at Sunspots Studios in Staunton, VA today, courtesy of one of my writing buddies. She also took this great picture of the process. (Thanks, Caroline!) The glass smith inserted a long tube into the blob of glass and then instructed Sam when and how hard to blow. It’s amazing how sturdy and fragile the finished ornaments are–breath held by molten sand. Even more amazing is that humans have been doing this for over 2000 years.
