Sam: Mommy, do you know why I’ve been helping you make dinner and breakfast a lot lately?
Me: No, I don’t.
Sam: Well, you know how Santa sees everything?
Me: [nods & thinks–ah, right. She’s kissing up to Santa]
Sam: And he can see when you do good things?
Me: [nods & thinks– I wonder if she’s going to ask for a bunny for Christmas]
Sam: So, I think if I’m really, really, really good…
Me: [waiting for it…] Yes?
Sam: Santa will let me be his helper!

She turns and beams at me. Then she resumes chopping garlic.
