16 April 2013 Requiem for a Robin’s Egg

Bird's egg grave
Sam and Susie were devastated to find two broken robin’s eggs on the ground behind a bush. The bird embryos had not survived the fall. We buried the eggs, and the girls decorated the gravesite with flowers and stones that said RIP. Then they sang a rousing French song and danced around the grave. I was telling this story at the park later and a mom said, “Oh, they had a New Orleans funeral.”

I was telling that story to AC this evening and Sam overheard us. “Why would we sing something sad?” she said. “THAT wouldn’t bring the bird back to life.”
