29 June 2012 Ready for the Dishwasher

Everything was going according to plan. Friday morning the electrician and the plumber showed up, ripped out a kitchen cabinet and got the space ready to receive a dishwasher. Home Depot was supposed to deliver and install it sometime between 4:30 and 8:30PM. The driver would call us 30 minutes ahead of time. In the meantime, the plumber told me not to use the right hand sink and to use the left sparingly. No problem, I said. I was prepared.
But I was not prepared for the delivery guys to show up at 10PM. In the middle of a massive storm. They dumped the dishwasher in the middle of our living room, apologized but said that they couldn’t stay to install it. They had the crazed look of people who have been driving through a hurricane with clenched jaws. “Someone will call you tomorrow morning,” they said. They flew out of our house.
About 5 minutes later the storm was over. We never lost power, though we did lose internet service for 2 days. And we were the lucky ones. I know people who are still out of power. I think the dishwasher is going to be a fixture in the living room for a while.
