14 September 2011 First Day at the Ballet School
Today was Sam’s first class at the Ballet School in the pre-primary level. This school was recommended over and over to us, and I liked that they follow the Royal Academy of Ballet syllabus, which is what Sam had been doing in the UK.
The only problem was that the Ballet School requires, absolutely requires girls with long hair to have their hair in a bun.
I’ve been fretting about the bun. Every time I try to put Sam’s hair in a bun, with pins, clips, hairnet–the works, it always pops out within a few minutes. I’ve read instructions online. I’ve watched YouTube videos. The head of the ballet school even showed me how to do it on her own hair.
But it hasn’t been working. I had the bright idea to give Sam’s hair a bit of a trim this morning, thinking that might make it easier. But someone kept moving her head around. And someone clipped one side of the hair a lot shorter than the other. And so that someone had to even it all out. End result, we took off about 2 inches. Sam was not happy. Her goal is not to get her hair into a bun, but to be able to sit on it. It looks fine, though, and it should be less tangly now. But still it wasn’t any easier to put it into a bun. Finally, I resorted to 10 different types of hair clips and pins and just stuffed it all under a little purple hair net.
Apologies that there’s no picture of the bun. I rushed Sam into the car before the wind could destroy it.
