4 June 2011 Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail

Sam and AC ride the Blue Ridge RT

Milestone: first family bike ride where Sam rode on her own bike. 8 miles!

Secondary milestone: I didn’t fall down or off my bike in any way at any time during the 8-mile ride. Not even when I snapped this photo.

This trail was lovely, wooded, and gentle. It follows the Piney River in Nelson County, about an hour south of Charlottesville. We’ll definitely be back. After all the punishing rides I suffered on the South Downs Way in southern England last year (see “Cycling Adventures in Sussex”), it sure was a pleasure to cycle rather than push the bike. There was still plenty of manure on the trail, though. Some things really are the same in both countries.
