28 August 2010 1066 Country
As in the “Battle of Hastings” country. Nothing about this trip went as planned. We missed our train. The train we did end up on was packed and we had to stand with our bicycles at the end of the car. We wanted to visit the Herstmonceux Castle and Science Center, but we were blocked by a Medieval Festival. We wanted to ride our bikes down the Cuckoo trail to Polegate, but we were blocked by a burst sewer pipe. Plus, I fell off my bike three times on the bridleway AND pinched my finger on a cattle gate. But, on the upside, the weather was beautiful, and I have a bunch of stories to tell, including one in which an old woman riding a motorized “Supershopper” gave us a winding tour through the town of Hailsham. Tomorrow we visit the actual town of “Battle,” but without the bikes. Here’s hoping I’ll spend less time picking myself up out of the mud and bushes of 1066 Country.
