30 March 2010 Sliding into Easter Hols
Instructor David watches Sam as she comes down the big bouncy slide at B&H Gymnastics Club. They set the inflatable slide up as a treat for the kids since this week begins the Easter Holiday, or “Easter Hols.”
I love the ways that different languages truncate certain words and expressions. My favorite English ones so far are: “pud” for “pudding” (which in turn can refer to any dessert); “mash” for mashed potatoes; and “Yorky” for “Yorkshire pudding.” Mmm, yummy truncations. Or should I say, “scrummy?” I had thought that “scrummy” was a shortened form of “scrumptious” but really it’s a portmanteau of “scrumptious” and “yummy.”
All this has me feeling a bit peckish. Time for a cuppa and a bickie.
