Building the rock of Gibraltar

We’re still in Brighton– see the chilly grey above–but today Sam wanted to make the rock of Gibraltar on the Brighton beach. We’ve started a monthly “country club” — an idea I’ve shamelessly stolen from my friend Sasha in the Bay Area and when I asked Sam which country we should start with, she said immediately “Gibraltar.”

It’s not that strange, since her father had a business trip there last year. And Gibraltar is a British territory.

In the meantime, Sam is getting to know the symbols of our new country of residence. She points out the British flag wherever we go and has lately become attuned to images of the Queen–she spots these mostly on paper bills and pub signs. She loves the idea that the UK has a queen but she does not approve of Her Majesty’s dress and appearance. Not enough sparkles, apparently.
