The Pavilion Surgery, Second Time this Week

Doctor: Do you like to watch the telly?

Sam: (hiding her face because she really didn’t want to come back to the doctor’s surgery)

Doctor: Is there a program you like on the telly?

Me: Sam, what do we watch on CBeebies on the computer?

Sam: (whispering) Charlie and Lola

Doctor: Oh I LOVE Charlie and Lola. They’re my favourite too.

Sam: (turning now to face the doctor) Yes, I like Charlie and Lola.

Doctor: Do you like pink milk like Lola does?

Sam: No.

Me: But, Sam, you do like strawberry milk, right?

Doctor: Ooh, strawberry milk.

Sam: (speaking in a normal voice to the doctor now) Yes, we have a store called Waitrose, and they sell strawberry milk. That’s what I drink.

The doctor tries to keep a straight face but can’t manage it. She starts to giggle. To hear a little foreign child explain about Waitrose– the nicest grocery store in Brighton–as though the doctor couldn’t possibly know of it was just too much.

Unfortunately this virus (or flu, we don’t know) is proving to be a bit too much for Sam. She is still quite ill. We are hoping she turns the corner before we fly back to the States on Monday.
