First Week in Brighton– in Pictures!

It feels like it’s been a long week, even though we did lose a day. I’m remembering now that on the day we arrived, I told Sam that it was Monday and she corrected me, “No Mommy, it’s Sunday.” Alas, in the UK it was indeed Monday.

So here’s what we’ve been up to since we arrived, bleary-eyed and wired, in Brighton:

Sam and AC look at the window at the Brighton coastline

This is the afternoon of the day we arrived. Sam and AC look out at the Brighton coastline from Sam’s bedroom window. Notice that she’s wearing a sundress? She is still a California girl.

Sam on the Brighton Beach, West Pier in the background

On Thursday Sam and I explored the pebble beach. The West Pier is in the background (built in 1866, burned down in 2003).

Our flat

This is a view of our building from the beach. Our flat is on the top floor of the brick building, corner unit, but set back a bit from the street.

Pond in front of the Royal Pavilion

On Saturday we took a picnic to the grounds of the Royal Pavilion. This is a former royal residence, built for the Prince Regent (George IV) in the early 19th century. Locals and guidebooks alike have told us that this was George’s place to play, far from the straitlaced court in London. Brighton seems to have maintained its reputation as a “pleasure palace,” and one British writer I’m reading (Julie Burchill) likens the city to Las Vegas. We’ll see if what happens in Brighton stays in Brighton 😉
