S is for Video

A few months ago, Grand-mère gave Sam a signed copy of Pamela George’s The North Carolina Alphabet. The illustrations and letters are gorgeous, though AC and I laugh every time we read “T is for Tobacco Farm.” Why not just “Tobacco?” Apparently the book was not adopted for official use in NC state elementary schools, because of the “X is for Fox” entry. Poor letter X must always be limited to “xylophone” and “x-ray,” though we have one alphabet book that says “X is for Xmas.” (I guess “Xenophobia” or “Xenophilia” would be just too abstract. Oh well.) Sam actually enjoys the fox quite a bit, although she insists that it is a kitty cat.

So here she is, reading the NC alphabet book from A to F. A couple of notes:

  1. This clip is a bit long (2.5 minutes) and likely only of interest to Sam’s parents, who are fascinated by her reading progress.
  2. It’s morning and Sammy is still in pajamas. AC is getting ready to go to work in the background.
  3. We’ve been teaching Sam to recognize letters and then pronounce what each letter “says.” For the moment, that short vowel sounds for vowels and hard ones for consonants (no soft “C” yet).
  4. The relevant pictures are: A is for Alligator; B is for Beaver; C is for Cardinal; D is for Dog; E is for Eagle; F is for Frog.
  5. Turn up the volume to hear Sammy better. Sound is an issue with our little digital camera.
  6. Near the end, Sam points out the “S” in the sentence “F is for Frog.”
  7. Yes, Sam also insists that one of the dogs is a kitty cat. The girl likes cats.

With thanks to lowercaseliberty for the post title.
